Chios is the fifth largest island of Greece.
It is located in the north east Aegean Sea, a few miles from the coast of Turkey, south of Lesvos.
A fertile island of contrasts and variety, an island of olive green mountains, orchards, mastiha trees, jasmine, multi-coloured houses, fishing boats, and nets spread out in the old harbour, with unique beaches of every kind, from sand to smooth black volcanic pebble ones… Chios has the largest merchant marine fleet in the world.
The Town of Chios, which is called 'Chora' by the locals, was built in the central east part of the island like all the adjoining in Asia Minor islands.
Chios is situated opposite the peninsula of Erythrea from which is separated with a narrow straight (channel), a position that proves the close connection between Chios and Ionia.
Chora is built almost in the centre of the east coast and is the most significant harbour in the island.
According to archaeological finds the island has been inhabited since 6000B.C.
